Counseling, also referred to as therapy or psychotherapy, is for the treatment of symptoms that interrupt the ability to function day-to-day in optimal emotional health. Typically, these symptoms would be categorized according to a specific diagnosis, such as Anxiety, ADHD, or PTSD, from mild to severe according to the DSM classification system utilized by the American Counseling Association. Under the care of a licensed professional counselor, services may include diagnosis and treatment and/or referral to another professional if the needs are out of the scope of the counselor.
Coaching is a technique originally derived from the counseling field, and utilized by many therapists to help a growth-minded, emotionally stable client identify mindset blocks, clarify goals, and strategize specific action steps. While coaching techniques may be effectively utilized within the counseling process, however, the treatment of mental health illnesses and disorders should be the priority.
It is common to pursue coaching only to uncover the underlying issues preventing growth that need to be addressed first in counseling. Typically, this is the result of the unrealized impact of past experiences in which there was relational or experiential trauma. And yet there is hope, for once you uncover the root issues, you can heal deeply and be transformed from the inside out to live the life you were made for.
